Reason 3 - Understanding The Fishing
The fishing and the bugs are really one and the same. As in the example above, anglers need to make their flies look and act like something that trout will perceive as food. Fly tying is a fantastic gateway into better fishing because it enables the tyer to understand the relationship between design and function. Simply put, fly patterns are designed in order to catch fish, and the best patterns act the most like trout food. A sparse cdc emerger will act very differently than a heavy perdigon, or stonefly with a 4.6mm bead, and they are meant to be fished in different situations. Fly tying is the form behind function, the means to the end, the process that proceeds performance.
